01/ Overview
The route
This circular tour leads you over the dreamy Bachers holiday village on Fähnerenspitz, one of the most beautiful vantage points in the Appenzellerland.
The snowshoe tour starts in the heart of the village, close to the Brülisau, Kastenbahn bus stop. At the outset, the route passes the Catholic Church of St. Sebastian before leaving the houses behind. Via Bachers, it climbs steadily through open Appenzell hill country. The eight-kilometre route involves around 620 metres of ascent, so the climb remains noticeable for a considerable stretch before the highest point is reached.
A little over halfway around the circuit, the route reaches the Fähnerenspitz. At around 1'500 m, it is also the highest point of the tour. The summit is the northernmost Swiss Pre-Alpine peak to rise above 1'500 m. Near the top, the route briefly skirts a patch of woodland before turning downhill. It descends across open slopes to the scattered houses and finally returns to Brülisau. After just under five hours, the snowshoe circuit ends near the Brülisau, Kastenbahn bus stop.

Current conditions
What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.
How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.
Snowshoeing is more fun in the snow! Check local conditions before heading out.
How we check: SLF only publishes its snow maps from November 1. Until then we roughly estimate the snow depth at the lowest and the highest point of the route every day from the nearest SLF measuring stations. Check the situation on site.
