Fribourg en diagonale

From the Pays de Gruyère to the Three Lakes Region and through the canton's principle tourist resorts of Gruyères, Fribourg and Murten. Discover typical Swiss landscapes: Alpine foothills and the agricultural, rolling hills of the Mittelland.

From the Gruyères, gare stop, the hiking trail climbs to Gruyères and passes Château Saint-Germain. The route continues across meadows and through settlements to Broc and Bulle, where it passes directly by Château de Bulle, the former seat of power.

The long ascent to the Gibloux then begins. Stretches of woodland alternate with open pastures until the highest point of the hike is reached at 1,205 m. On the far side of the mountain, an extended series of ascents and descents leads through Fribourg’s rolling countryside. Near Hauterive, the trail crosses the Glâne on the bridge by the Chapelle Sainte-Apolline, then continues through Pérolles and northwards.

Beyond La Corbaz, woodland and open farmland once again define the route. The Ruisseau de la Crausa accompanies the trail for a short stretch. Via Greng and Meyriez, the route approaches Lake Murten and ends at Murten/Morat railway station. With a distance of around 68 kilometres and a hiking time of over 19 hours, the route is best divided into several stages.
