01/ Overview

The route

Mountain lakes, open slopes and views of three Alpine passes define the Urschner High Trail. After a short ascent, a long mountain trail leads high above the Urserntal and down to Andermatt.

From the Tiefenbach PostBus stop, the mountain trail initially climbs via Tätsch. Shortly after the first ascent, the high-level hike reaches its highest point near Schafberg at around 2,300 m. Rocky sections alternate with open Alpine pastures, while views open up across the Urserntal and towards three Alpine passes.

The Urschner High Trail continues via Gespenderboden, Lochbergegg and Lipferstein in a steady succession of ascents and descents. Along the way, Blauseeli and Lutersee offer opportunities for a break by the water. Across the broad, largely treeless slopes, the view down into the valley remains unobstructed for a long stretch. Above Realp, forest protects the village from avalanches.

The long descent then begins. In places, the mountain trail narrows and leads towards Hospental, where mountain bikes may be encountered. Via Moos and Bäz, the route approaches Andermatt; the open slopes give way to meadows and finally the first houses. A short final stretch through the village ends at Andermatt railway station after just under six hours.

03/ Conditions

Current conditions

What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.

  • How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.

  • How we check: We look up a live public transport connection from your starting point to the stop closest to the trailhead. If it ends further away, the nearest stop may be a cable car or bus that isn't running right now.

  • How we check: Snow depth estimated daily at the lowest and the highest point of the route. Estimates: check the situation on site.
