Gastlosen Tour

The Gastlosen circular route south of Jaun offers a variety of geology and flora seldom found by walkers in the Alpine foothills. There is a magnificent view of the Bernese Alps, with the peaks of the 13,000 foot Wallis Alps in the background.

The circular hike begins in Jaun, Musersbergli, not far from the Gastlosen bus stop. A broad hiking trail initially leads through open pastures. The path soon narrows and continues as a mountain trail towards the rocky Gastlosen. The route steadily gains height between grassy slopes and short stretches of woodland.

At Wolfs Ort, the highest point is reached after the first major ascent. At around 1,930 m, the gradient eases and the trail turns to the other side. The mountain trail that follows makes up most of the circuit. It leads through open terrain before beginning a long descent. For a short section, the trail runs alongside the Gambach.

After the long descent, a gentle counter-ascent follows through woodland and pastures. Shortly before the finish, the trail passes Bärghus Gastlosen. A little later, the circuit closes in Jaun, Musersbergli. Around four hours should be allowed for the 11 kilometres with approximately 780 metres of ascent.
