01/ Overview
The route
This hike along the ridge of Schwyberg Mountain offers fantastic views of the Swiss Mittelland with a backdrop of the Jura Mountains and the foothills and the Alps on the other side. The pristine, lovely Schwarzsee, changing colour from turquoise to black, depending on the light, is both start and destination.
The almost six-hour circular hike begins at the Schwarzsee, Gypsera bus stop. Initially, the trail leads to the wildlife observation and lookout tower and close to the shore of Schwarzsee. It then leaves the lake behind and climbs towards Schwyberg on a yellow-marked hiking trail through woodland, meadows and pastures.
The highest point, at around 1,640 m, is reached on the long ridge about halfway through the hike. Up here, open pastureland and the broad ridge define the character of the route. After a total ascent of around 900 metres, the climb eases and the route turns downhill.
The descent alternates for some distance between woodland and open terrain before reaching Lichtena. From there, the circular route returns to Schwarzsee with gentler intervening climbs. After 18 kilometres, it ends once again near the Gypsera bus stop.

03/ Conditions
Current conditions
What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.
How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.
How we check: SLF only publishes its snow maps from November 1. Until then we roughly estimate the snow depth at the lowest and the highest point of the route every day from the nearest SLF measuring stations. Check the situation on site.
