01/ Overview

The route

A mysterious waterfall, a beautiful forest path and imposing limestone rock faces are the defining features of this leg from Jaun to the Chalet du Soldat. Your destination for this leg is in a magnificent spot with far-reaching views of the Gastlosen mountain range and numerous peaks of the Fribourg Prealps.

From the Jaun, Dorf bus stop, the route immediately begins to climb. Beyond the last houses, a long ascent starts, initially on a yellow-marked hiking trail. Before long, it joins a mountain trail marked in white-red-white. The path leads through woodland and across open meadows, climbing almost continuously. Over just six kilometres, the ascent amounts to around 800 metres; with only about 70 metres of descent, the direction remains clear.

Roughly halfway along, the path becomes easier again, although the gradient remains noticeable right to the end. Between sections of woodland and open pasture, the Chalet du Soldat draws closer. This is also the highest point of the hike, at around 1,750 m, near the rocky Rüdigenspitze. After just over two and a half hours, the hike ends at the Chalet du Soldat. The destination is not served by public transport; the nearest stop, Abländschen, Ganderli, is around two kilometres away.

03/ Conditions

Current conditions

What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.

  • How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.

  • How we check: We look up a live public transport connection from your starting point to the stop closest to the trailhead. If it ends further away, the nearest stop may be a cable car or bus that isn't running right now.

  • How we check: Snow depth estimated daily at the lowest and the highest point of the route. Estimates: check the situation on site.
