01/ Overview

The route

Two mountain lakes, exposed rock and long stretches away from marked hiking trails: the short Steinalp Glacier Trail loop follows the traces left by ice and rock.

The Steinalp Glacier Trail begins at Wendenläger near the Sustenpass. The starting point is not served by public transport; the nearest stop, Steingletscher, Susten, is around one kilometre away. This geological theme trail leads through open, increasingly rocky terrain, focusing on the glaciology, geology, flora and fauna of the Steinalp.

The route initially climbs steeply. After just under one kilometre, it reaches its highest point at around 2,080 m, not far from Chööbärgli. Seebodensee soon lies directly beside the trail. The loop then descends across broad alpine pastures, running largely outside the marked hiking trail network. Only lower down does a short section follow a mountain trail marked in white, red and white.

In the final third, the route turns back towards Wendenläger. At Steinsee, a lake by Steingletscher, it once again reaches the water’s edge. From there, it continues gently up and down across open, rocky terrain back to the starting point. At the finish, too, the Steingletscher, Susten stop is just over one kilometre away.

03/ Conditions

Current conditions

What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.

  • How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.

  • How we check: We look up a live public transport connection from your starting point to the stop closest to the trailhead. If it ends further away, the nearest stop may be a cable car or bus that isn't running right now.

  • How we check: Snow depth estimated daily at the lowest and the highest point of the route. Estimates: check the situation on site.
