01/ Overview

The route

A steep panoramic trail leads from rocky Stand down to Trübsee. Information boards recount the geological history of the Alps as views open up towards Trüebsee.

The Geological Trail begins at Stand station, high above Engelberg. At the outset, the mountain trail, marked in white-red-white, climbs briefly to its highest point at around 2,450 m. In the rocky terrain near Laubersgrat, the climbing park lies close to the route. Information boards draw attention to the Earth’s history and explain the geology of the TITLIS region. At the same time, they turn the descent into a brief journey through the formation of the Alps.

The steep panoramic trail then continues almost entirely downhill. Between rock and open alpine pastures, it descends around 650 metres over just over three kilometres; Trüebsee increasingly comes into view, although it remains slightly off the route. The descent along the mountain trail requires concentration right to the end. After just over an hour, the fountain is reached, followed shortly afterwards by Trübsee mountain station, where the hike ends at the nearby Trübsee stop.

03/ Conditions

Current conditions

What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.

  • How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.

  • How we check: We look up a live public transport connection from your starting point to the stop closest to the trailhead. If it ends further away, the nearest stop may be a cable car or bus that isn't running right now.

  • How we check: Snow depth estimated daily at the lowest and the highest point of the route. Estimates: check the situation on site.
