01/ Overview

The route

Get away from it all here on this spectacular snowshoe trail to the Grubenberg Hut. This is located high above the lovely Saanenland, at the foot of the bizarre limestone crags of the Gastlosen mountains.

In Abländschen, the roughly eight-kilometre snowshoe tour begins with a sustained ascent. Sections of forest and open slopes characterise the route towards Mittelberg, with open terrain making up the greater part. The climb to the Grubenberghütte gains around 540 metres in elevation and takes just over two hours, reaching the highest point at around 1,840 m approximately halfway along the route.

The Grubenberghütte stands directly on the route and marks the end of the long ascent. The trail then sweeps back down towards the valley in a wide arc. Open terrain alternates with forest as elevation is steadily lost throughout the second half. Towards the end, the lower-lying meadows of Abländschen draw closer once again. After just over four hours, the circuit returns to its starting point; the nearest stop, Abländschen, Jaungrund, is around 300 m away.

03/ Conditions

Current conditions

What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.

  • How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.

  • How we check: We look up a live public transport connection from your starting point to the stop closest to the trailhead. If it ends further away, the nearest stop may be a cable car or bus that isn't running right now.

  • Snowshoeing is more fun in the snow! Check local conditions before heading out.

How we check: Snow depth estimated daily at the lowest and the highest point of the route. Estimates: check the situation on site.
