01/ Overview

The route

The trail runs from the high Musersbergli station to the panoramic viewing area. Through the forest you reach the «Soldatenhaus» at the foot of the Gastlosen mountains. If you arrive at the right place, at the right time, you can admire the dazzling sun filtering through the «Grossmutterloch».

The snowshoe tour starts at Musersbergli, from the Gastlosen bus stop. Right at the beginning, the route passes Bärghus Gastlosen before climbing between forest and open slopes towards the rugged Gastlosen. Away from the route, Marchzähne and Gratflue provide a rocky backdrop.

After around an hour and a half, the tour reaches its highest point near Rüdigenspitze, at about 1,750 m. The summit lies south of Jaun on the cantonal border between Fribourg and Bern. From here, the route descends across open terrain and through longer stretches of forest; short counter-climbs interrupt the otherwise pronounced descent.

In the final third, the route continues to lose altitude and approaches the first houses of Jaun. Restaurant de la Cascade lies directly on the route shortly before the finish, while the Cascade de Jaun waterfall is a little off the route. After around ten kilometres and just over four and a half hours, the snowshoe tour ends at the Jaun, Dorf bus stop.

03/ Conditions

Current conditions

What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.

  • How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.

  • How we check: We look up a live public transport connection from your starting point to the stop closest to the trailhead. If it ends further away, the nearest stop may be a cable car or bus that isn't running right now.

  • Snowshoeing is more fun in the snow! Check local conditions before heading out.

How we check: Snow depth estimated daily at the lowest and the highest point of the route. Estimates: check the situation on site.
