01/ Overview
The route
A short, steep mountain trail from Pfingstegg to Bäregg. Along the way, the Geological Trail and the Climate Guide app reveal how the mountain landscape of the Jungfrau region is changing.
The short but strenuous mountain hike begins at Stählisboden by the Pfingstegg stop. From Berghaus Pfingstegg, the trail climbs across open meadows before soon entering the forest. Almost the entire route follows a mountain trail, gaining around 460 metres in elevation over just under three kilometres. Along the way, the Climate Guide app draws attention to signs of climate change in the Jungfrau region.
Higher up, the forest thins out and rocky terrain dominates the landscape. The steady ascent ends after around one and a half hours at Bäregg, at approximately 1'770 m, the highest point on the route. The Berghaus, newly built in 2006, stands on the western slope of the Mättenberg above Grindelwald. The Geological Trail ends here. The destination is away from traffic; the nearest stop, Grindelwald, Gletscherschlucht, is around 1.8 km away.
