01/ Overview
The route
The Eiger North Wall is close enough to touch from the Eiger Trail and the various world-famous climbing routes to the notorious Eiger summit are easy to spot.
The hike begins at Eigergletscher station, almost at its highest elevation. After a short ascent, the highest point is reached at around 2'350 m. The mountain trail, marked in white, red and white, then continues through open pastures and rocky terrain. The sometimes stony path requires care, but leads predominantly downhill. Over six kilometres, the route descends a good 800 metres. Open landscapes and barren rock define almost the entire hike.
For a short stretch, the route leaves the marked hiking trail network before the mountain trail once again clearly indicates the way. Long sections descend across broad slopes, with only brief minor climbs interrupting the descent. Near the end, Berghaus Alpiglen stands directly beside the route. A few steps further on is Alpiglen station, where the hike of just under two hours ends in Grindelwald.
