Via Alpina, Stage 11/20

The climb to Kleine Scheidegg over undulating meadows is gentle, the rock and ice scenery of the Eiger North Wall close and awe-inspiring. Sunny high-level trail to Wengen, then deep into the Lauterbrunnen Valley with its vertical walls and spectacular waterfalls.

The hike begins in the village, close to Grindelwald station. For a short while, the trail follows the Schwarze Lütschine, then leaves the built-up area behind and climbs steadily across open meadows and pastures. After the long initial ascent, the route passes Berghaus Alpiglen and continues to Kleine Scheidegg.

Around the halfway point, the pass between the Eiger and Lauberhorn is reached. Restaurants offer an opportunity for a break before the trail reaches its highest point shortly afterwards at around 2,060 metres. The long descent now begins. Via Wengernalp, a waymarked hiking trail leads downhill through open terrain.

After Wengen, the surroundings once again become more built-up. The trail continues to lose height rapidly and ends in Lauterbrunnen, just a few steps from the station. A good six and a half hours should be allowed for the 20 kilometres, with around 1,150 metres of ascent and 1,400 metres of descent.
