01/ Overview

The route

Quietly exploring Appenzell’s rolling countryside: from Schwellbrunn, highest-located village in Ausserrhoden, the trail leads across a ridge with views of the hills, to the Alpstein mountain range with the Säntis Mountain and Lake Constance. Afterwards you delve into the forest and hike downhill.

The snowshoe tour begins in the hamlet of Halden, near the Schwellbrunn, Dorf bus stop. The route climbs across open slopes towards Risi, interspersed with short sections of forest. After the first steep ascent, it reaches its highest point at Hochwacht, at 1,084 m. A little further on, the trail passes directly by Restaurant Sitz.

From there, it descends for some distance across meadows and through forest. At the lowest point of the circuit, the terrain lies just below 800 m, after which the route begins to climb again. Over a total distance of eight kilometres, the trail gains around 440 metres in elevation. Towards the end, pastures, isolated sections of forest and the first houses alternate in quick succession. After around four hours, the route reaches Schwellbrunn, ending not far from the Protestant Reformed church and just a few steps from the Schwellbrunn, Dorf bus stop.

03/ Conditions

Current conditions

What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.

  • How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.

  • How we check: We look up a live public transport connection from your starting point to the stop closest to the trailhead. If it ends further away, the nearest stop may be a cable car or bus that isn't running right now.

  • Snowshoeing is more fun in the snow! Check local conditions before heading out.

How we check: Snow depth estimated daily at the lowest and the highest point of the route. Estimates: check the situation on site.
