01/ Overview

The route

Impressive hike through the Gasteretal, one of the most magnificent high-Alpine valleys. Surrounded by steep cliffs, the waters of the young Kander flow sometimes gently, sometimes untamed and thundering. Wealth of Alpine flora in spring.

The approximately eleven-kilometre hike to Selden begins at Kandersteg railway station. The route initially leads out of the village and across the sparsely settled valley floor. The forest soon takes over as the broad, yellow-waymarked trail steadily gains altitude. For a short section, the Schwarzbach accompanies the route, its course adding variety among the trees and open clearings.

Beyond Waldhaus, the surroundings become more open. Meadows and pastures replace the dense forest, interspersed with rocky sections. A fire pit directly beside the trail provides a good place for a break. The steady ascent remains easy to walk and amounts to around 460 metres of ascent over the entire route.

Towards the end, the trail steepens once more and reaches its highest point at around 1,550 m shortly before Selden. From there, it is only a few more steps to the Selden, Gasthaus Steinbock bus stop, where the hike ends after just over three hours.

03/ Conditions

Current conditions

What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.

  • How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.

  • How we check: SLF only publishes its snow maps from November 1. Until then we roughly estimate the snow depth at the lowest and the highest point of the route every day from the nearest SLF measuring stations. Check the situation on site.
