01/ Overview
The route
A mountain village with breathtaking surroundings invites you to stop and stare. Pass by meadows and along the Kander – the river that gave Kandersteg its name – and enjoy ever-changing views of the mountain peaks.
This short circular hike starts directly at Kandersteg railway station. The yellow-marked hiking trail initially leads through the village and soon out between meadows and pastures. With no lengthy ascent, the route gains only a little elevation; after just under one kilometre, it reaches its highest point at around 1,200 m. Here, open countryside and forest edges dominate the landscape, while the houses of Kandersteg recede into the distance.
Shortly afterwards, the trail passes Restaurant Ermitage. The circuit then continues through sections of forest and back across open countryside before approaching the first houses of Kandersteg. With a total elevation gain and loss of only around 40 metres, the undulations remain gentle. Towards the end, a final section leads through the village. After around three kilometres and just under an hour, the circuit closes back at Kandersteg railway station.

How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.
How we check: SLF only publishes its snow maps from November 1. Until then we roughly estimate the snow depth at the lowest and the highest point of the route every day from the nearest SLF measuring stations. Check the situation on site.
