01/ Overview
The route
The Elm cross-country trail is surrounded by the Tectonic Arena Sardona UNESCO World Heritage Site and runs through the beautiful Wakker Prize-winning mountain village.
The starting point at the municipal building is around 140 m from the Elm, Dorf bus stop. Initially, the circuit leads through Elm and close to the church before leaving the houses behind. Open meadows dominate the scenery, while at Unterbach the route briefly approaches the edge of the forest. Over the first three kilometres or so, it climbs in several undulations to the highest point at just over 1,000 m.
This is followed by a longer series of ascents and descents across the open terrain around Elm. The total ascent amounts to around 180 m, so despite the modest difference in elevation, there are repeated short counter-climbs. After the lowest point in the second section, the trail turns back towards the village. After eight kilometres and just over two hours, the circuit ends back at the municipal building.
