01/ Overview

The route

A natural history mountain trail across alpine pastures and through the game reserve: the highlight is the Sassigrat, with views into two valleys, before the steep descent through the Chlital back to Isenthal.

The nearly seven-hour circuit starts at the post office by the Isenthal, Dorf bus stop. The mountain trail, marked in white-red-white, leaves the houses behind and alternates between woodland and open slopes on its way to St. Jakob. It then climbs via Chimiboden and Steinhüttli to Wilderbutzenstafel. Along the way, the accompanying booklet draws attention to the biodiversity in the federal game reserve.

Higher up, the alpine pastures open out. At Biwaldalp stands one of the route’s two mountain inns, before the long ascent reaches its highest point at around 1'830 m shortly before the Sassigrat. The pass offers views into both valleys. The mountain trail then leads to Musenalp with its mountain inn, followed by a steep descent over a grassy slope into the Chlital. The route returns through woodland and open pasture to the first houses of Isenthal and the post office; the Isenthal, Dorf bus stop is only a few steps away.

03/ Conditions

Current conditions

What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.

  • How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.

  • How we check: We look up a live public transport connection from your starting point to the stop closest to the trailhead. If it ends further away, the nearest stop may be a cable car or bus that isn't running right now.

  • How we check: Snow depth estimated daily at the lowest and the highest point of the route. Estimates: check the situation on site.
