01/ Overview
The route
The Lake Thun panorama round trail is an exciting and enjoyable, several-day hike through the Bernese Oberland with majestic lake and mountain panoramas, passing historic sites and impressive caves.
From Thun railway station, the route initially leads to the shore of Lake Thun. Through Hünibach, the hiking trail climbs into the wooded slopes on the sunny side of the lake. Open meadows and villages provide variety before the route reaches Sigriswil and Merligen. At the St. Beatus Caves, the trail passes a network of limestone caves before continuing via Sundlauenen.
On the opposite side of the lake, the longest ascent begins after Därligen. Via Meielisalp, the route leads through forest and across pastures to the highest point near Greberegg at around 1,070 m. The descent runs via Krattigen to Spiez, where the route passes directly by the castle.
The final section continues steadily up and down through settlements and patches of woodland back to Thun. Along the way, the ruins of the 13th-century Strättligen Castle lie almost directly on the route. After 63 kilometres and just under 20 hours of hiking, the circuit closes back at Thun railway station.
