01/ Overview
The route
The name is well chosen: On the Panorama Trail above Heiden, cross-country skiers enjoy views over Lake Constance and the Alpstein. Embedded in the curving terrain, the trail offers an exciting up and down through the Appenzell alpine foothills.
The trailhead at Rehetobel, Nasen is some distance from public transport; it is around 350 m from the Rehetobel, Ausserkaien stop. The nine-kilometre trail initially crosses open meadows, steadily gaining elevation. Beyond the houses of Tanne, it continues towards Zelg, while the settlement quickly gives way once more to open pastureland.
The highest point, at around 1,070 m, is reached in the first third of the route, near St. Anton. This is followed by a longer series of ups and downs through the open, hilly landscape. The total elevation gain is around 220 metres, with no single climb dominating the circuit. In the final third, the trail descends to just under 1,000 m before climbing gently once more. After a little over two and a half hours, the circuit closes at the starting point in Rehetobel, Nasen.
