01/ Overview
The route
Starting from Bellelay in the region of the famous TĂŞte de Moine AOC cheese, this snow-shoe excursion will take you to Sur Montbautier in the uplands of the Montagne du Droit before passing through the forest of the same name on the way back to your starting point.
The nine-kilometre snowshoe tour begins in the village, directly at the Bellelay, Le Domaine bus stop. Beyond the first houses, the route climbs steadily for a long stretch across the open Jura heights. Meadows and pastures dominate the scenery, interspersed with patches of woodland that divide up the broad landscape. After just under two hours, the circuit reaches its highest point at Montbautier, at around 1,160 m. Most of the ridge lies in the canton of Bern; its highest point is near the Haut de BĂ©mont farmstead at 1,184 m.
The descent begins near the Mont viewpoint. The route now enters the forest more frequently and loses considerable height before the final third. The Gouffre de la Rouge Eau lies not far from the trail, after which the terrain opens out again. Crossing gentler expanses of Jura countryside, the circuit makes one final climb back to the first houses of Bellelay and the Le Domaine bus stop.
