01/ Overview
The route
This enjoyable snowshoe hike along the Mont-Croisin and Mont-Soleil crests will take you between the wind turbines and the solar-power plant, always in sight of the impressive Chasseral massif which dominates the Saint-Imier valley.
The starting point of the snowshoe tour is just a few steps from the Mont-Crosin, col bus stop. Right from the outset, the route crosses the Col du Mont Crosin and heads out onto the open Jura heights. Amid expansive meadows and pastures, gentle ascents alternate with short descents; most of the roughly eight-kilometre route leads through open terrain. With a total ascent of around 200 metres, the route remains undulating until its final third.
The forest then draws closer, and the route climbs to its highest point at around 1'280 m. This lies just below Mont Soleil, whose summit, away from the trail, reaches 1'291 m. From here, the route descends mainly through forest and clearings to Mont-Soleil. After just over three hours, the snowshoe tour ends directly beside the funicular station for Saint-Imier.
