01/ Overview

The route

This lovely circular route leads through the dense forests of Mornera. Along the way, some pretty views through the trees extend from the castles of Bellinzona to the Lago Maggiore.

The snowshoe tour begins at the Mornera stop, just a few steps from the Monte Carasso, Mornera starting point. The five-kilometre circuit initially enters the forest and soon begins to climb. At first, woodland dominates the surroundings. The route gains around 260 metres in elevation overall. The highest point comes only in the final third, so the ascent accounts for much of the tour, which takes just over two hours.

Higher up, the forest gives way to open ground. The route continues through the more open terrain and, after just over three kilometres, reaches its highest point near Mött at just under 1'500 m. It then descends towards the forest once more. The trail leads back to Mornera through trees and clearings, completing the circuit after around five kilometres at the starting point not far from the stop.

03/ Conditions

Current conditions

What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.

  • How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.

  • How we check: We look up a live public transport connection from your starting point to the stop closest to the trailhead. If it ends further away, the nearest stop may be a cable car or bus that isn't running right now.

  • Snowshoeing is more fun in the snow! Check local conditions before heading out.

How we check: Snow depth estimated daily at the lowest and the highest point of the route. Estimates: check the situation on site.
