01/ Overview
The route
This route, which follows an easily accessible level footpath, invites you to discover the Valle Verzasca at a time of year when it is least crowded. Walking along the river, among typical stone cottages («rustici»), you will enjoy the peace and quiet of one of Ticino’s most beautiful landscapes.
The roughly seven-kilometre winter hike starts in the village, directly by the Sonogno bus stop. The circuit initially winds between the houses before emerging into open countryside. With only around 130 metres of ascent, the route remains gentle; meadows and pastures characterise the first section, later alternating with stretches of woodland.
The route sweeps in a broad arc through the valley. Near the furthest point of the circuit, the La Froda waterfall lies in rocky surroundings, around 200 metres off the route. Shortly afterwards, the winter hike reaches its highest point at around 950 m; Cima di Cardèd is the nearest summit.
The circuit then turns back towards Sonogno. In the village, the late Neoclassical church of Santa Maria Lauretana stands slightly off the route. After just over two hours, the winter hike ends back at the Sonogno bus stop.
