Trans Swiss Trail, Stage 29/32

Steep climb to the Val d’Isone with views of Piano di Magadino. Only a marsh remains of the lake at Gola di Lago. On through a sea of ferns in a sparse birch forest towards Bigorio. Santa Maria Franciscan monastery like an eagle’s nest above Tesserete.

At around 25 kilometres, with a good eight hours of walking and some 1,400 metres of elevation gain, this tour demands stamina. It begins at Bellinzona, Stazione and initially leads out of the city. Well-maintained hiking trails pass through residential areas to Camorino, where the long ascent into the wooded slopes begins.

After around seven kilometres, the hiking trail becomes a mountain trail. Sections of woodland alternate with open meadows and pastures, with recurring views across the Ticino hills. Roughly halfway along, the route reaches Isone and passes directly by the church of San Lorenzo, which has been documented since 1452. It then climbs via Gola di Lago to the highest point near Matro di Stinchè at just under 1,100 m.

The descent now begins through woodland and across open slopes. Via Crucis and Bigorio mark the final section before Tesserete is reached. The hike ends at the church of Santo Stefano, whose origins date back to the 9th century. The Tesserete, Stazione stop is only a few steps away.
