01/ Overview

The route

The spectacular ridge, border and panoramic tour climbs to the Gazzirola peak as its highlight before following the Italian border. You can take a break at San Lucio, which has an inviting small lake and tiny church. The descent takes you through limestone landscapes with distinctive vegetation to Capanna Pairolo.

The long mountain hike begins at Capanna Monte Bar at around 1,600 m. The starting point is some distance from public transport; the nearest stop, Corticiasca, Vecchia, is about 1.5 km away. Right from the start, the white-red-white waymarked mountain trail climbs to Monte Bar before continuing across open high ground.

At Monte Gazzirola, the route reaches its highest point at just over 2,100 m amid rockier terrain. A long descent to Passo San Lucio follows. Close to the national border, Capanna San Lucio stands directly beside the trail; the pass links Val Colla with Italy’s Val Rezzo.

The mountain trail then continues steadily up and down across open pastures to Cima di Fiorina on the border. Towards the end, the route loses considerable elevation and increasingly enters the forest. After around 17 km and a good seven hours, the hike ends at Capanna del Pairolo. Here too, public transport is not directly accessible from the trail; Cimadera, Paese is around 1.8 km away.

03/ Conditions

Current conditions

What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.

  • How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.

  • How we check: We look up a live public transport connection from your starting point to the stop closest to the trailhead. If it ends further away, the nearest stop may be a cable car or bus that isn't running right now.

  • How we check: Snow depth estimated daily at the lowest and the highest point of the route. Estimates: check the situation on site.
