01/ Overview

The route

From the hut in a beautiful location, you take a varied route through rocky landscapes and charming beech forests. There are plenty of fantastic views of the surrounding mountains and lakes. The hike ends with a further highlight: the Mediterranean-style city of Lugano, where you can cool off in the lake.

The starting point is at Capanna del Pairolo, at 1,347 m. It is not served by public transport; the nearest bus stop, Cimadera, Paese, is around 2 km away. From the hut, the mountain trail climbs through the forest to Passo Streccione and continues over Bocchetta di Brumea.

Between wooded saddles and rocky summits, the route largely follows the ridge. After a good two hours, it reaches Passo Biscagno before the trail begins to climb towards Monte Boglia. At just over 1,500 m, this is the highest point of the hike. The ridge along the border between Switzerland and Italy then leads into the long descent, with open slopes alternating with woodland and rocky terrain.

In Brè sopra Lugano, the route passes the parish church of Santi Simone e Fedele. Around the village, a short section runs outside the marked hiking trail network, before continuing on hiking trails over the 925 m Monte Brè and down to Cassarate. After a good five hours, the hike ends in Lugano, just a few steps from the Paradiso stop.

03/ Conditions

Current conditions

What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.

  • How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.

  • How we check: We look up a live public transport connection from your starting point to the stop closest to the trailhead. If it ends further away, the nearest stop may be a cable car or bus that isn't running right now.

  • How we check: Snow depth estimated daily at the lowest and the highest point of the route. Estimates: check the situation on site.
