01/ Overview
The route
A hiking tour between lake and mountains in close contact with nature. At the foot of Monte Caprino the trail leads up and down through the forest and along the Lake of Lugano. Don’t forget to stop at the typical grottoes to taste Ticino specialties and also plan a visit to the Customs Museum in Cantine di Gandria.
The short hike begins at the S. Rocco (lago) stop in Caprino, by Grotto San Rocco. The white-red-white marked mountain trail climbs immediately, reaching the route’s highest point at around 330 m right at the start. It then continues through dense woodland and across open sections, with frequent steep ascents and descents. Despite the low altitude, these add up to around 200 metres of elevation gain.
About a third of the way along, Grotto Pescatori stands beside the trail. The mountain trail then continues towards Cantine di Gandria. Near the end, the route draws close to Lake Lugano; between the shore and the wooded slope, the first houses signal the approach to the destination. Cantine di Gandria is reached after around four kilometres and just over an hour. Grotto Descanso lies shortly before the end point, with the Museo doganale svizzero (lago) stop just a few steps away. The hike combines a consistently demanding mountain trail with tranquil woodland sections and a finish directly beside the lake.
