01/ Overview
The route
The hike from Monte San Salvatore to Vico Morcote is a classic for the whole family. Always slightly downhill, woodlands alternating with well-kept villages, pretty grotti and scenic views.
From the Paradiso bus stop, the mountain trail immediately begins its long ascent. It quickly gains height between houses and woodland. Beyond the Puntorosso viewpoint, the highest point of the hike is soon reached at just under 900 m. The summit of Monte San Salvatore and its church lie only a few steps off the route.
The trail then loses height again and leads mainly through woodland. Open meadows and small settlements break up the greenery before Carona is reached around the halfway point. The mountain trail then continues with steady ups and downs along the wooded Arbostora ridge. Altogether, the ascent amounts to around 840 metres.
Towards the end, the long descent to Morcote begins. Near Castello di Morcote, the landscape becomes settled again, before the trail drops down to Lake Lugano. After around four and a half hours, the twelve-kilometre hike ends at the Morcote (lago) bus stop.
