01/ Overview
The route
The hike from Monte San Salvatore to Vico Morcote is a classic for the whole family. Always slightly downhill, woodlands alternating with well-kept villages, pretty grotti and scenic views.
At the Paradiso stop, the roughly four-and-a-half-hour mountain trail begins with a determined ascent. Houses and roads are soon left behind as the path enters the forest and continues uphill via Puntorosso. After around three kilometres, the route reaches its highest point at Monte San Salvatore, at just under 900 metres. The Chiesa di San Salvatore stands on the summit, just a few steps away.
The trail then descends again, alternating between woodland, open meadows and small settlements. It leads via Ciona to Carona, followed by a longer, mostly wooded section across the peninsula. The constant ups and downs demand further stamina, even though the main ascent has already been completed.
Towards the end, the pronounced descent to Morcote begins. Passing close to the Castello di Morcote, the route leads down between the village houses. After a total of around twelve kilometres, the hike ends near the shore of Lake Lugano at the Morcote (lago) stop.
