01/ Overview

The route

This is popular circular route around the Pfäffikersee lake in the Zürcher Oberland. It leads through exceptionally attractive nature, with typical moorland flora, passing the romantic farming village of Seegräben and back to the lively lake promenade at Pfäffikon ZH.

From Pfäffikon railway station, the hike leads through the town centre and soon reaches the shore of Pfäffikersee. The broad hiking trail follows the lake through open meadows and extensive wetlands, with frequent views across the water. With no significant climbs, it continues via Ruetschberg to Seegräben on the opposite side of the lake.

The route then stays close to the shore and passes the lido kiosk. It follows the Chämtnerbach for a short stretch before the trail and stream part ways again. Towards the end, the circular route leaves the lake and climbs gently towards Zimberg. At around 550 m, this is the highest point of an otherwise flat hike.

Shortly afterwards, the trail passes the Kleinkastell Irgenhausen, a Roman fortification. From there, the route leads back to Pfäffikon. After just over two hours, it ends in the town; the railway station is another 400 m or so from the end point.

03/ Conditions

Current conditions

What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.

  • How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.

  • How we check: SLF only publishes its snow maps from November 1. Until then we roughly estimate the snow depth at the lowest and the highest point of the route every day from the nearest SLF measuring stations. Check the situation on site.
