01/ Overview

The route

In the footsteps of the Romans along an old natural-stone wall to Wildhaus. Over an elevated terrace with top views beneath the Kreuzberge and a fable trail with many anecdotes. The sunny terrace of Wildhaus with Schönenbodensee lake.

The roughly 20-kilometre hike begins at the Sennwald, Post bus stop. Beyond the houses of Sennwald, the yellow-marked hiking trail climbs through meadows and pastures, with stretches of woodland providing shade along the way. The ascent defines the day: in total, the route involves around 1,200 metres of elevation gain and approximately six hours of walking.

Just over a third of the way along, the route passes the ruins of Hohensax Castle. The castle was built around 1200 by the Barons of Sax and has stood in ruins since 1446. The ascent then continues, alternating between open countryside and woodland. Below Summerigchopf, the trail reaches its highest point at around 1,130 m.

The route now heads towards upper Toggenburg. Schönenbodensee lies a short distance off the route, before the ruins of Wildenburg appear beside the trail. Over the final few kilometres, the houses of Wildhaus draw closer. At Wildhauspass, the trail passes the Reformed church and ends shortly afterwards in the village, just a few steps from the Wildhaus, Dorf bus stop.

Current conditions

What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.

  • How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.

  • How we check: SLF only publishes its snow maps from November 1. Until then we roughly estimate the snow depth at the lowest and the highest point of the route every day from the nearest SLF measuring stations. Check the situation on site.
