01/ Overview

The route

Passing Nendeln and Mauren, you pay your respects to the Schellenberg, which in 1699 became the first Herrschaft (region) to fall to the Principality of Liechtenstein. Today impressive residences line the way down into in the Rhine plain and Ruggel.

The hike begins at the Gafadura Hut, already at the highest point of the route at around 1,430 m near Ansaspitz. The starting point is well away from public transport; the nearest stop, Haag (Rheintal), Rütistrasse, is around 6 km away.

Initially, a mountain hiking trail leads across open meadows and pastures. Although the route heads clearly downhill overall, the terrain includes several further counter-ascents. After the first quarter, the route joins a yellow-marked hiking trail. Woodland alternates with open terrain as the long descent leads gradually from the heights into the Rhine Valley. In total, it amounts to around 1,450 metres of descent.

After 19 km and a good five and a half hours, the hike ends in Ruggell. An additional stretch must be allowed for onward travel by public transport: the nearest stop, Sennwald, Hof, is around 1 km from the actual destination. The long distance and substantial descent require stamina.

03/ Conditions

Current conditions

What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.

  • How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.

  • How we check: We look up a live public transport connection from your starting point to the stop closest to the trailhead. If it ends further away, the nearest stop may be a cable car or bus that isn't running right now.

  • How we check: Snow depth estimated daily at the lowest and the highest point of the route. Estimates: check the situation on site.
