01/ Overview
The route
Although it is in the Pre-Alps, walking the snowshoe trail in the Riggisalp will feel as though you are in the high mountains: the route is bordered by the Schwarzsee’s two impressive peaks, the Kaiseregg and the Spitzfluh.
The four-kilometre snowshoe trail begins at the Schwarzsee Gypsera bus stop by the valley station. The first steps lead out of the village, close to Schwarzsee, which covers around half a square kilometre. Before long, the lengthy ascent begins; around 480 metres of elevation must be gained to reach Riggisalp.
Above Schwarzsee, the route alternates between open meadow slopes and sections of woodland. The houses are left behind as the trail steadily gains height. With virtually no intervening descents, the steady climb sets the pace. A little over two hours should be allowed for the entire route.
In the final quarter, the tour reaches its highest point at around 1,500 m. It then continues to Riggisalp with only a slight loss of elevation. The destination is Riggisalp mountain station, where the snowshoe trail ends directly by the stop.
