01/ Overview

The route

From the highest point on Rigi Kulm, the panoramic trail leads across open slopes, along a former railway line and through Rigi Kaltbad to Rigi Scheidegg – accompanied by sweeping views of the Alps.

The hike begins at Rigi Kulm station, reached by the cogwheel railways from Vitznau and Goldau, at around 1,750 m and also the route’s highest point. The broad hiking trail descends across open slopes. The panoramic view extends from the Säntis to the Bernese Alps; the route passes the Regina Montium mountain chapel on the way towards Rigi Kaltbad.

A stop at Känzeli is worthwhile, and shortly afterwards the rock chapel of St. Michael stands directly beside the trail. The chapel on Rigi Kaltbad has its origins in a legend and is regarded as a pilgrimage site. Beyond the houses of Rigi Kaltbad, the route continues via Rigi First and joins the former railway line. Old bridges and tunnels give this middle section a rhythm of its own.

After a long, gentle ascent across pastures, the Dossen comes into view, although the trail does not reach its summit. A little more elevation is gained at Hinder Dosse. The panoramic trail then leads to the Rigi Scheidegg chapel and, a few steps further on, to the station of the same name, where the hike of just under three hours ends.

  • How we check: We look up a live public transport connection from your starting point to the stop closest to the trailhead. If it ends further away, the nearest stop may be a cable car or bus that isn't running right now.

  • How we check: Snow depth estimated daily at the lowest and the highest point of the route. Estimates: check the situation on site.
