01/ Overview

The route

A short, barrier-free circular trail between Rigi Kaltbad and First, with gentle gradients, open meadows and sweeping views over Lake Lucerne.

The short circular trail through Rigi Kaltbad begins at Rigi Kaltbad-First station. The cogwheel railway from Vitznau and the cable car from Weggis bring hikers to the starting point. The partly paved trail, accessible to pushchairs and wheelchairs, passes the Evangelisch-Reformierte Bergkirche and follows the Unterer Firstweg past the first houses.

At Rigi First, the Bärenstube lies directly on the route. The trail then climbs gently across meadows along the Oberer Firstweg. Benches along the way offer places to rest as views open up over Lake Lucerne. Information panels explore the geology and formation of the Rigi.

The highest point is reached at just under 1,500 m, not far from Rigi Rotstock, which lies off the route. The trail then descends back to Rigi Kaltbad, ending at the station after around two and a half kilometres.

03/ Conditions

Current conditions

What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.

  • How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.

  • How we check: We look up a live public transport connection from your starting point to the stop closest to the trailhead. If it ends further away, the nearest stop may be a cable car or bus that isn't running right now.

  • How we check: Snow depth estimated daily at the lowest and the highest point of the route. Estimates: check the situation on site.
