01/ Overview
The route
The Chänzeli is one of the most popular viewing points on the Rigi. Once at the top, the view across Lake Lucerne and the city of Lucerne as far as the Swiss plateau is impressive. The snow-covered Alpine chain rises in the south. Even the journey is an experience.
The two-kilometre circuit starts at the Rigi Kaltbad-First stop, in the heart of Rigi Kaltbad. The waymarked hiking trail leads through the village and soon passes St Michael’s rock chapel. Situated at around 1,400 m, this chapel, which is worthy of protection, is a reminder of the early importance of the Kaltbad spring to tourism on the Rigi.
The trail then leaves the settlement behind. Open meadows and short stretches of woodland characterise the gently ascending section to the Känzeli. Just under halfway along the route, the viewpoint also marks the highest part of the circuit at around 1,460 m. The trail then descends gently back to Rigi Kaltbad. After about half an hour, the circuit closes back at the Rigi Kaltbad-First stop.

03/ Conditions
Current conditions
What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.
How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.
How we check: SLF only publishes its snow maps from November 1. Until then we roughly estimate the snow depth at the lowest and the highest point of the route every day from the nearest SLF measuring stations. Check the situation on site.
