01/ Overview
The route
A short, steep panoramic trail leads from Rigi Kaltbad over the Rotstock. Wayside shrines, flower-filled meadows and sweeping views of the Alps and the Swiss Plateau accompany the route to Rigi Staffel.
From the Rigi Kaltbad-First stop, the trail initially leads through Rigi Kaltbad. The cogwheel railway from Vitznau and the cable car from Weggis bring hikers almost to the starting point. Just beyond, the broad hiking trail climbs steeply uphill. Wayside shrines line the Stations of the Cross as the houses recede and ever wider views open up across the exposed slopes.
After around half the distance, the highest point is reached at Rigi Rotstock, at roughly 1,650 m. Benches stand in the flower-filled meadow, with sweeping views extending across the Swiss Plateau and towards the Alps. From up here, both cogwheel railway lines leading up the Rigi from Vitznau and Goldau can also be seen.
The route now descends briefly, passes the barbecue hut and continues across open meadows. Approaching Rigi Staffel, scattered trees and the first buildings reappear. The two railway lines meet at Rigi Staffel; a few steps further on, the hike ends at the stop of the same name.

03/ Conditions
Current conditions
What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.
How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.
How we check: We look up a live public transport connection from your starting point to the stop closest to the trailhead. If it ends further away, the nearest stop may be a cable car or bus that isn't running right now.
How we check: Snow depth estimated daily at the lowest and the highest point of the route. Estimates: check the situation on site.
