01/ Overview
The route
On this winter hiking trail, you can escape the fog and enjoy the mystical mood in the open landscape of the upland moor, the largest in Switzerland. It lies in a high valley where the Biber river flows in its natural bed.
The signposted winter hike starts at Rothenthurm railway station. A short distance off the trail near the start stands the Letziturm, a well-preserved medieval defensive tower also known as the Roter Turm because of the colour of its roof. The houses are soon left behind, and the route runs between open meadows and moorland into the flat landscape. For long stretches, wetlands and the broad horizon dominate the scenery. The gentle climbs are barely noticeable along the loop.
At the Steinstoss-Stubli, the route reaches its highest point at around 930 m, roughly halfway through the circuit. It then continues through open terrain, always descending or climbing only gently. Meadows and moorland also line the return leg. Towards the end, the first houses of Rothenthurm draw closer again. After seven kilometres and a little over two hours, the winter hike ends at Rothenthurm railway station.
