01/ Overview

The route

A winter wonderland in Rothwald – this trail leads through larches up to the Mäderlicka restaurant with views as far as Italy before descending into the Durstbachschlucht gorge. Before starting the journey back, you can make a stop on Wasenalp and enjoy views of the surrounding mountains and the Rhône Valley.

The seven-kilometre snowshoe tour begins at the Rothwald, Schutzhaus bus stop on the edge of Rothwald. Initially, the route climbs through the forest, later giving way to open slopes. The long ascent leads towards Chastelegga and reaches its highest point after just over two and a half kilometres, at around 2,230 m.

The route then descends across open terrain before re-entering the forest. About halfway along, the Wasenalp chapel stands directly beside the route. From here, the descent continues through the Ganterwald; in total, around 520 metres of ascent and slightly more descent are covered.

After approximately four hours, the snowshoe tour ends at Rothwald, Ganterwald. The bus stop of the same name is only a few steps from the finish.

03/ Conditions

Current conditions

What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.

  • How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.

  • How we check: We look up a live public transport connection from your starting point to the stop closest to the trailhead. If it ends further away, the nearest stop may be a cable car or bus that isn't running right now.

  • Snowshoeing is more fun in the snow! Check local conditions before heading out.

How we check: Snow depth estimated daily at the lowest and the highest point of the route. Estimates: check the situation on site.
