01/ Overview

The route

The high plateau surrounding the Simplon pass, lined with snow-covered larches and frozen lakes, is ideal for snowshoe tours. From the pass road, the trail leads across the plateau formed by glaciers, past scattered alpine settlements, always with the impressive panorama of the peaks as a backdrop.

The snowshoe tour begins at the Simplon Hospiz; the bus stop of the same name is just a few steps away. From the starting point, the circuit crosses the open plateau of the Simplon Pass. With no lengthy approach, it climbs steadily and reaches its highest point at around 2,100 m after just under two kilometres.

The route then turns downhill towards Hopsche. The small alpine settlement forms a distinctive landmark in the broad pass landscape. Shortly afterwards, the snowshoe trail passes close to Hopschusee, a mountain lake at just over 2,000 m. The route reaches its lowest point in this hollow before climbing gently again on the return leg.

The route continues via Kulm into the surroundings of the Simplon Pass, which lies at just under 2,000 m. The pass separates the Valais Alps from the Leone Group and links the Rhône Valley with Val Divedro. After around four kilometres and just over two hours, the snowshoe tour ends back at the Simplon Hospiz.

03/ Conditions

Current conditions

What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.

  • How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.

  • How we check: We look up a live public transport connection from your starting point to the stop closest to the trailhead. If it ends further away, the nearest stop may be a cable car or bus that isn't running right now.

  • Snowshoeing is more fun in the snow! Check local conditions before heading out.

How we check: Snow depth estimated daily at the lowest and the highest point of the route. Estimates: check the situation on site.
