01/ Overview
The route
A historic mule track, dry-stone walls and the panoramic Farnere characterise this demanding circuit from Schüpfheim. Beyond the summit cross, the trail leads across alpine pastures and through woodland back to the village.
From Schüpfheim railway station, the hiking trail initially leads through the village and via Boumatte to Chlusboden. At St. Niklaus, the long ascent towards Fruttegg begins. Meadows and pastures dominate the open slopes, with the trail passing through stretches of woodland in between. Along the old alpine track, dry-stone walls recall the historic mule route. The Frutteggweg was built as an alpine road in 1872/73.
Higher up, the route climbs steadily to Farnere. After a good three hours, the highest point is reached at around 1,560 m. The summit cross, with two benches and a panoramic information board, marks this scenic resting place above Schüpfheim. The trail then descends via Stolen. At Stolehüttli, there is a barbecue area with a supply of firewood as well as a shelter.
The long descent alternates once more between alpine pastures and woodland. Towards the end, the first houses of Schüpfheim come into view; the route leads through the village back to the railway station, completing the circuit after around 13 kilometres and approximately five hours.

Current conditions
What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.
How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.
How we check: We look up a live public transport connection from your starting point to the stop closest to the trailhead. If it ends further away, the nearest stop may be a cable car or bus that isn't running right now.
How we check: Snow depth estimated daily at the lowest and the highest point of the route. Estimates: check the situation on site.
