01/ Overview
The route
Starting in the Bernese Oberland, the stage leads from Gsteig near Gstaad along old mule trails over the Col du Sanetsch – a historic pass into Valais. Enjoy magnificent panoramic views of the Valais Alps and the glacier world of Les Diablerets.
From the Gsteig b. Gstaad, Post bus stop, the route initially leads out of the village. It climbs steadily across meadows and through woodland. After just under three kilometres, the route joins a mountain trail marked in white, red and white. The long ascent defines this 13-kilometre hike, gaining around 1,150 metres in just under five hours.
Around halfway, the Sanetschsee comes into view. The path runs close to the shore of the 29-hectare reservoir before continuing uphill through increasingly open terrain. Above the pastures, the surroundings become barer and rockier, and the mountain trail once again demands stamina.
Near the Sanetschpass, the hike reaches its highest point at around 2,240 metres. A final descent through the open upland landscape leads to the Hôtel du Sanetsch. The Sanetsch, hôtel stop is a few minutes’ walk from the finish.
