01/ Overview
The route
The first section of the Schanfigger Höhenweg leads from Arosa across the sunny plateau of Medergen to Sapün. An extraordinary scenic tour past old Walser settlements, culminating in amazing views of the Schanfigg.
The hike starts at Obersee by the Arosa stop. Initially, a broad path leads out of the village and down to the Arosa reservoir, the lowest point on the route. The trail then climbs to Furggaalp. Open meadows and pastures now dominate the scenery, later giving way to alternating stretches of open woodland and exposed slopes.
The mountain trail, mostly marked in white-red-white, continues in steady undulations via Tieja to Medergen. The final major ascent begins at the Alpenrose. Near Chopfji, the route reaches its highest point at around 2,100 m. It then passes Ringbüel and descends to Langwies, Heimeli. Just over three and a half hours should be allowed for the 11 km hike, which involves around 640 metres of ascent. The destination is not served by public transport; the nearest stop, Weissfluhgipfel, is around 3 km away.

Current conditions
What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.
How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.
There may be snow on this hiking trail. Bring appropriate gear and plan accordingly.
How we check: SLF only publishes its snow maps from November 1. Until then we roughly estimate the snow depth at the lowest and the highest point of the route every day from the nearest SLF measuring stations. Check the situation on site.
