Schlittelweg Stoss–Altstätten

The rack railway of Appenzeller Bahnen takes the sledge riders up to Stoss, the local mountain of Altstätten. The ride on the old pass road leads rapidly along the railway back into the valley: through forests, past the old customs building and always with a view into the Rhine Valley.

The descent begins at Stoss AR railway station, on the 944-metre-high Stoss, directly beside the Schlachtkapelle. The pass links the Appenzellerland with the St. Gallen Rhine Valley; from the upper edge of the steep valley slope, the route accordingly opens out downhill towards Altstätten. Over four kilometres, the sledging run descends around 480 metres.

At first, the route crosses open terrain. Farther down, sections of forest and the first houses replace the open slopes, while the descent continues steadily into the Rhine Valley. Towards the end, the settlement becomes denser. The historic town centre with the Church of St. Niklaus lies slightly off the route; the Restaurant am Markt is located nearby. Almost 500 metres below Stoss, the run ends after a little over 50 minutes at the Altstätten SG, Stadt stop.
