Schmetterlingspfad Lungern

Switzerland's most diverse population of butterflies can be found above the emerald-green waters of Lake Lungern. Information panels along this high-altitude trail with views of the Bernese and Central Swiss Alps describe the most striking of over 100 butterfly species that have their habitat here.

At the Turren stop, the mountain trail begins a final ascent. Restaurant Turren is soon left behind, after which open meadows and pastures dominate the scenery. At times, the route runs outside the marked hiking trail network before reaching its highest point near Gütsch at around 1,740 m. It then continues via Sädel in a steady descent.

The trail now widens and increasingly enters the forest. From here on, the long descent defines the hike: over 13 km, it totals around 1,200 metres of descent, for which a good four hours should be allowed. Towards the end, the trail emerges into open terrain again and reaches Bürglen, where it passes directly by the chapel. Shortly afterwards, the route meets Lungerersee, a natural reservoir. From there, it is only a few more steps to Kaiserstuhl. Kaiserstuhl OW railway station is close to the end point.
