01/ Overview
The route
The first stage of the Schwyzer Höhenweg (high-level trail) is a relatively short but steep hike to the highest point of the Rigi at 1,797 metres above sea level. The spectacular panoramic views, the lovely location between three lakes and the wide range of leisure activities contribute to this mountain's popularity.
From Küssnacht am Rigi railway station, the route first leads to the nearby shore of Lake Lucerne. At the Baroque parish church of St. Peter and Paul, it turns away from the lake and follows the village stream out of Küssnacht. The houses are soon left behind. The hiking trail passes Alpenhof and climbs steadily towards the Rigi between patches of woodland and open meadows.
Above Seeboden, the trail becomes a mountain path and gains altitude noticeably. Pastures now dominate the mountainside, while the long ascent offers little respite: around 1,200 metres of elevation are gained in just nine kilometres. After almost four hours, the route ends near Rigi Rotstock at its highest point, at around 1,600 m. The Rigi Staffel stop is right by the destination.

03/ Conditions
Current conditions
What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.
How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.
How we check: SLF only publishes its snow maps from November 1. Until then we roughly estimate the snow depth at the lowest and the highest point of the route every day from the nearest SLF measuring stations. Check the situation on site.
