Sentiero Lagh dal Mat

Less well-known hike into the Val dal Saent in the lower part of the Valposchiavo. It leads across the largest alpine pasture in the valley, through larch forests, up above the tree line and to a mountain pass on the Italian border. About halfway through the tour: the two alpine lakes Lagh da la Regina and Lagh dal Mat.

The circular hike begins in Cavaione, Pescia Bassa, at 1,820 m. The starting point is not served by public transport; the nearest stop, Cavaione, is around 3 km away. From here, the white-red-white waymarked mountain trail initially climbs across open meadows and pastures, then continues uphill through forest.

As the route gains height, the terrain becomes increasingly barren and rocky. Near Al Mat, after the long ascent, the route reaches its highest point at around 2,560 m without taking in the summit itself. The mountain trail then descends to Lagh da la Regina, which lies directly beside the route. Its waters form a tranquil counterpoint amid the rocks and pastures.

Continuing downhill, the circular route crosses the Col d’Anzana at 2,224 m. This border pass connects Puschlav with Valtellina. From there, the trail returns to Pescia Bassa across open slopes and through forest. A little over four and a half hours should be allowed for the 12 km route with around 860 metres of ascent; at the finish, the Cavaione stop is again around 3 km away.
