01/ Overview

The route

Monte Generoso is more than just a mountain railway destination. One of the most impressive panoramic views in Switzerland and imposing architecture await you at the start of the hike. En route, you pass by old mills, stunning gorges and vineyards.

The roughly 20-kilometre hike begins at the Capolago-Riva S. Vitale stop. Initially, the route crosses open terrain, with a longer section outside the marked hiking trail network. After around six kilometres, the highest point is reached near Monte Generoso at just under 1,700 metres. A mountain trail then descends over rocky sections and into the forest.

The first houses appear at Roncapiano. The descent continues to Muggio, where the trail passes the Church of San Lorenzo. Cabbio follows shortly afterwards. Between the villages, the route follows the Breggia for several kilometres; stretches of forest now alternate with meadows and built-up areas.

Passing through Bruzella, with its Church of San Siro, the final section continues down the valley. The building combines late Baroque and Neoclassical elements with Rococo features. After around six hours, the hike ends in Mendrisio, just a few steps from the stop of the same name.

03/ Conditions

Current conditions

What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.

  • How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.

  • How we check: We look up a live public transport connection from your starting point to the stop closest to the trailhead. If it ends further away, the nearest stop may be a cable car or bus that isn't running right now.

  • How we check: Snow depth estimated daily at the lowest and the highest point of the route. Estimates: check the situation on site.
