01/ Overview

The route

A short climb leads to Monte San Giorgio, where fossils up to 300 million years old have been found. Past the villages of Meride and Tremona, a gentle descent takes you to the "Magnifico Borgo" of Mendrisio, known for its elegant historic buildings.

The hike begins at the Morcote (lago) stop on the shore of Lake Lugano. The opening section runs partly outside the marked hiking trail network before a mountain trail enters the forest. After the first ascent, the route reaches Serpiano. Shortly afterwards, at around 690 metres, it reaches the highest point of the hike.

Woodland, open meadows and short stretches through settlements now alternate. The trail continues over steadily undulating terrain to Meride, where the Locanda San Silvestro lies directly on the route. This is followed by a longer section on mountain trails towards Tremona. There, the hike passes the Chiesa dell’Assunta, the village parish church.

Towards the end, the trail widens and gradually loses elevation. It continues through a more built-up area to Mendrisio. After 14 kilometres and around four and a half hours, the hike ends near the Mendrisio stop. The total ascent amounts to around 660 metres, with forest remaining the defining feature of the landscape.

03/ Conditions

Current conditions

What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.

  • How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.

  • How we check: We look up a live public transport connection from your starting point to the stop closest to the trailhead. If it ends further away, the nearest stop may be a cable car or bus that isn't running right now.

  • How we check: Snow depth estimated daily at the lowest and the highest point of the route. Estimates: check the situation on site.
